The Man Who Lived Inside the Fish

The story of Jonah … it’s much more than meets the eye!

Jonah Sermon Series(1).png

Most people know Jonah as the man who was swallowed by a fish … and lived to tell the tale! The biblical account of the Old Testament prophet is so much more than the Sunday school story we’re used to. Jonah’s story is actually a telling of the central messages of the Bible. It’s a story of recovering that which has been lost because of sin, and living a new life in what we have found!

Jonah had been rescued from the storm. He had also been delivered from the belly of the fish. He had tasted God's mercy and rejoiced because of it! Yet there was only great idol remaining in Jonah's heart, which robbed him of compassion for his fellow human beings. Only when that final idol is demolished in our hearts will we recover compassion as God intends it for us.

Jonah had found safety and comfort in all the wrong places. Now sitting in the belly of a great fish, he finally came to his senses. His sin and arrogance had taken him down. He now needed to look for help from above. Jonah's story teaches us something, too. Only when we are deprived of every other helper and comfort can we truly grasp the source of salvation.

But sometimes we're so desperate to know who we are that we latch onto an "imposter self". That's what happened to the prophet Jonah in ancient Israel. As we ready his story, we'll learn to spot and reject the imposter, so that we can hold on to our truest self"
